Overload!

Heh, just come to after yet another autistic / sensory overload induced migraine …. Dam you Plymouth why do you need to be so noisy , still managed to buy hilary some nice dresses, and I seem to have caught the migraine at the right time and took the meds to sort it….

Normally I’d still be in bed fast asleep , so bonus I guess xD

Apple does it again!

Wow! whilst there ware fears that apple “post Steve Job’s” was possibly heading for doom, After watching the June 2012 wwdc there are indeed some very cool things ahead.

Even to the extent of iPads being “built” with autism in mind, using “single app” mode, where the parent can effectively lock the iPad into a single apple, without the worry of the child coming out of the app, or launching something else.

Apple’s stance on embracing solid state is made clear with its new MacBook Pro with a 768GB solid state drive! But on top of that the MacBook Pro is getting Retina display!!! and its thinner to sport , and yet still 7 hours battery life ** passes out **

I guess you can tell im geeking out at 100% presently 🙂

Taylor Morris

This is a YouTube video made by an Autistic Girl, it is quite an eye opener ( i guess ) for those who may not quite “get” what being autistic is

Hope this helps 🙂

Whats in a name?

Ive had a number of well meaning people say to me, “Adrian, im glad to hear you have got the diag of Aspergers, but you are still the same guy” ( or something similar, and please note this is not in anyway a dig, im overwhelmed with the awesome response ive had from people, so thanks! <3 ) And yes, they are all totally correct, nothing about me has changed in that respect, However now that it is OFFICIAL i can now gain access to help and services etc that i require. And this is in a nutshell what i was after ( though also just knowing from the professionals is also good! ) , Thing is this, this condition is invisible, for the most part, comments like " its not a life threaten condition" ( as one of my clients has said, think they were relieved that i was not gonna die on the spot, finding a good IT guy seems to be hard these days apparently ) , and again, whilst true, it makes life VERY hard, and has in the past put me into a position where i simply wanted to end my life. Whilst i understand that it must be so totally hard / foreign for others to understand, Autism is always "on" there is no respite from it, and that in itself is very draining. This is sorta a follow on post from "official" and will be the last that i shall be making directly about myself and my recent discovery of Aspergers ( really dont want to bend any of your ears off guys <3 ) So whats the point of this post? 1. Just knowing about it goes a LONG way in coping better with it! 2. Attempting to get people to understand that whilst im not missing any limbs there is still something profoundly hard that people like myself have to put up with every waking hour , That said , the benefits ( if thats the best word i can find ) of having a "hot wired" brain is kinda cool, and i certainly would not be the person i am today! 3. General awareness to any "hidden" medical problems people have. One of the most major things that affect me ( as already mentioned ) is stress and sensory overload ( though these two are also linked alittle too! ) , Last week for example , Thursday , was a HEAVY day , now in work mode i preformed according to correct parameters ( as DATA would put it ) , However when i got home .... Well things then just slowly took over, and yet again, find myself popping migraine pills and heading to a darkened bedroom. And i hate that!! How many hours do i waste of my life in bed with a throbbing headache, Just because the world is too loud, sometimes too complicated, or ive spent hours on end "blending in" with normality ( or more often that not all the mentioned combined plus more! ) And this is what other people do NOT see, i for one try VERY hard not to talk about this, smile and say everything is cool, and as soon as i shut the front door, i collapse in a heap, and slowly drag myself to bed ( again! ). If you know someone who is autistic / aspergers / bi-polar etc ... wiki it / google it find out what it is, and how ( if possible ) you can help. Now that ive found out whats been "odd" about myself, i feel almost compelled to help others in any form that i can, and it seems that this blog my well just be of some help to others in similar situations. If you currently do not have an official diag, then i strongly recommend going for one, Its going to be a long journey , but for me, at least , so far its been worth it. AS ive already mentioned above, this is the last "blogging" that im going to be making about myself, and describing my so called woes etc, think ive covered a good chunk to be going on with, though my email address is always open if people need to email, or use the comments system in here. From here on in, im going to try to bring info , news , anything helpful to light here, it will mainly be on the themes of :- Autism, Aspergers, Dyslexia Photography ^^ Computers ( duh! :p )

Aspergers

Ok, I know ive already spoken about this on a previous post ( Official! ) , But now that ive told the 6 important people via text about me being diagnosed as Aspergers , i feel, now , is the time to cover a little history as to what has eventually lead me to this!

From about the age of 12, i knew something was odd / different , Cub / scout camps where terrifying for me, Why? Different surroundings and being away from family and the familiar home, I remember often using a shiny spoon to make sure that my face was not changing too much whilst i was away from home, worried that if it did, maybe my parents would not recognise me when they came to collect me from camp! Of course the use of the spoon, not a smart idea, as it distorted the face! PERFECT! :p

During school, well i kinda kept myself to myself, had 3 maybe 4 friends that i would gravitate towards from time to time, but nothing major really!

Then came the computer and electronics , yea! thats where i was at, did not want to go out and play ( did not see the point, nor really liked it much to be quite honest! ) so i would spend most of my time programming the TRS-80 or the ZX-Spectrun ( ZX80 first! ) and then the Atari ST , By i guess 16 i wrote a computer program that i “left” at Tandy / Radio Shack shop, where it “took” over their systems and displayed rude messages, and the staff who thought they knew it all could not even stop the program from running, let alone find the hidden code which i pushed all into high memory!!

The various jobs i held were never really anything that “helped” me, there was always an aspect in each job that i clashed with, none more so that the Wiggins Teape paper mill , That place was responsible to ramping my condition into critical zone! what with at least 2 attempts at taking my own life and a subsequent depression which i think lasted 2 years ( i was away, and yet still getting sick pay, for a LONG time! )

Eventually the mist started to clear when we moved to Kingsbridge, The Taxi driving was a means to an ends ( that is, getting contacts and getting known by the locals ) for my computer business.

Now the computer business is great, yes i have my down days, and always when in work mode, thats all anyone ever sees, is Adrain in work mode, i will not get out of the mode until im home….then the fall out.

Yes without Aspergers i could work alot longer and harder, however without it i would not be the computer IT geek that i am, infact im quite happy as i am, The downsides i just have to put up with!!

What are the downsides?
Well for me its always been sensory at the top
1. Sounds / Noise — can not filter it, it all comes in one go at same priority , it is, putting it mildly , quite panicing to get though, Ive only recently discovered noise cancelling earbuds+iPod = control over noise = possibly able to cope in loud areas, you just cant speak to me , cos ive also filtered you out too!

2.Touch — often the case, but nice soft clothing is a must, some shirts will get flung into orbit if they are scratchy ( and jumpers etc! ) , My immediate family have no doubt noticed that im not a great one for the “hug” either! Hilary and Rebecca are fine , anyone else sadly its just :/

3.Light — Bright lights / flashing lights ewwww! put me in Top Shop in Plymouth and time me to see how long i will remain in there!

There is so much more i could go on about i guess, things like having to send Hilary into a restaurant first, to make sure it is not to bright / loud / busy for me

And possibly my family got a glimpse into how quickly i shut down, like on December 28th when i just had to shut down and go to bed ( sorry who evers bed it was that i nicked! ) but this “shutting” down is a very regular thing! and it “ticks” me off to put it VERY politely to end up wasting my time in bed asleep due to not being able to cope with what ever was going on.

Guys / Family / Friends you are welcome to ask questions, im more than happy in trying to answering them, Sorry ive not even hinted at this before much really, but needed to be sure , before i opened my mouth , as i often end up shoving my foot in there!

Thanks!!

Adrian <3
